Definition of motivation


Motivation is the inner state that causes an individual to behave in a way
that ensures the accomplishment of some goal. In other words, motivation
explains why people act as they do. Motivation may be defined as the process at stimulating some to adopt a desired course of action. In brief sense motivation is the drive to achieve a goal. In details sense to attain organizational goal, motivation is a process of making best use of the organization's employees and it is a system to encourage, inspire and to motive the organizational activities.
Borolson and Steiner described that, "motivation is an inner state that energizes. activates, or moves and directs or channels behavior toward goals".
M.J. Gannon described that "Motivation basically means an individual needs desires and concepts that cause him or her to act in a particular manned'.
Heinz Weihrich and Harrold Koontz describe that "Motivation is a general term applying to the entire class of drives, desires, needs. wishes and similar forces"
So we can say that
(i) it's a process of making best use of employees
(ii) it's a process of inspiring, encouraging and motivating

(iii) it's mainly operated for attaining organizational goal



Motivation is one of the most crucial factors that determine the efficiency and effectiveness of an organization. All organizational facilities will remain useless unless people are motivated to utilize these facilities in a productive manner. Motivation is an integral part of management process and every manager must motivate his subordinates to create in them the will to work. High motivation provides the following advantages:

1. Higher efficiency: Motivation is an effective instrument in the hands of
management to minimize efficiency of operations. A worker may be very
competent but no activity can take place until the individual is willing to perform that activity. What employees do depends largely on how much and why they want to do. Motivated employees give greater performance than demotivated ones.
2.Optimum utilization of resources: Motivation inspires employees to
make best possible use of different factors of production. They work whole heatedly to apply their abilities and potential in minimizing waste and cost the enterprise can make maximum use of its physical and financial resources. Motivation has a persuasive influence on the enterprise. It is an essential element of direction.
3.Reduction in labor turnover: Higher motivation leads to job satisfaction
of workers. Opportunities for need satisfaction make employees loyal and
committed to the organization. As a result labor absenteeism and turnover one low.
4.Better industrial relations: Increased labor productivity in turn results
in higher wages for employees. Motivational schemes create integration of
individual interests with organizational objectives. There arises a sense of
belonging and mutual co-operation at all levels. This will reduce labor unrest and create better relations between management and workers.
5.Easier selection: An enterprise that puffer's abundant financial and non- financial incentive enjoys reputation in the labor market. Therefore, if can easily attract competent persons for filling various vacancies, Its public image is improved.
6.Facilitates change: High motivation helps to reduce resistance to change. An organization has to incorporate changes to copy with environmental changes keeping the Organization effective.
7 .Maximum use of manpower: Whatever the organizational employees
are capable and expert, in work field if they aren't inspired and encouraged, then organization won't get aspect result from them. This is shown in a formula, Performance ability knowledge.
8.Mass production: Every organizational success depends on low casting
according to maximum production. For this reason, Manpower of .the organization should be used in the best way. Motivation helps to make the best usual the manpower.
9.Increase Of flexibility: Motivation creates a strong relation between
higher level and lower level. So flexibility of organization is increased because of motivation.
10.Increase confidence level: Motivation enhances the power of
organizational activities. It's a big process of increasing confidence level.
